Before becoming a watchmaker, Jiro Katayama worked as an industrial designer, with a particular interest in mechanical objects and vintage instruments. That background is clearly reflected in his watches, which often look more like pieces of machinery than conventional timepieces.
The No. 7.5 draws inspiration from vintage film cameras, with its raised displays, jumping hours and rotating minute and seconds discs. I like how Katayama has developed such a recognisable design language without relying on traditional watchmaking aesthetics. It’s unconventional, but there’s a clear thought process behind the design, and that’s what makes Ōtsuka Lōtec particularly interesting to me.
