The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph (Ref. 25860ST.OO.1110ST.04) is where Genta’s original 1972 icon meets practical sportiness—elegant yet capable, historic yet modern. Introduced in 1997, it was among the very first Royal Oak chronographs, distilled into a compact and wearable 39 mm case with only about 11 mm thickness, a rarity for a complication of this type.
The stainless steel case retains the hallmark octagonal bezel with exposed screws and finely brushed facets. Screw-down pushers and crown echo that design language, ensuring the watch stays true to Royal Oak’s robust heritage while offering 50 meters of water resistance.
The dial is a refined chapter in RO lore. In this reference, the “Grande Tapisserie” dial—available in black, blue, or its less-common anthracite tone—hosts chronograph counters at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock, with the date discreetly placed at 4:30. On anthracite versions, collectors note a subtle transformation over time: some dials develop a warm brown patina, adding rare visual character.
Behind the dial ticks the Caliber 2385—an automatic chronograph movement based on the reliable Frédéric Piguet 1185 but elevated with AP’s column-wheel mechanism and 40-hour power reserve.
Among collectors, the anthracite-dial variant has earned its nickname: “Kasparov.” The legendary chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov was often seen wearing this reference, and his association cemented the model’s cult status.
Its integrated steel bracelet is another hallmark: comfortable, precise, and seamlessly flowing from case to clasp. Early examples featured a rectangular Gay Frères clasp, later replaced by an “AP”-shaped version—each variant prized for its vintage touch.
