Collector’s Insight

Rolex has brought the ombré dial back into the spotlight, and this time it’s on the Datejust 36. The concept itself isn’t new, but the execution is interesting. Rather than using a conventional sunburst finish, Rolex applies green lacquer and gradually introduces black towards the outer edge, creating a smooth transition from a brighter centre to a much darker perimeter.

I think this combination works particularly well on the 36mm Datejust. The green adds some personality, while the darker edges keep the overall appearance relatively restrained. Paired with the white-gold fluted bezel, it’s a familiar Datejust with a dial that deserves a closer look. A nice way of refreshing a classic without changing much of what makes it appealing in the first place.
